VW ID.Buzz – Flex Cab
Movement without moving.
For Snoeks Automotive, the challenge was to create a cinematic film around the electrification of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo and the Flex Cab conversion, while working with one major limitation: the vehicle had to remain indoors and could not be driven.
I directed, wrote and shot the film around that restriction rather than trying to hide it. The concept became almost humanless: the vehicle is treated as the subject itself, revealed through light, movement and detail rather than through a driver or conventional automotive action.
The visual direction leaned toward a contemporary sci-fi language. Because the van could not move, camera movement and lighting had to create the sense of energy. A red-and-teal palette was developed around Snoeks’ red vehicle wrap, with practical lighting integrated into the location to extend that color language through the space.
The entire production had to be completed in one day on a single indoor location. One of the biggest practical challenges was gaining enough control over the large space to shape the light precisely and keep the world around the vehicle dark and intentional.
The result is a controlled, technical and cinematic film that gives the vehicle a sense of presence without ever needing to put it on the road.
Volkswagen responded strongly to the film and seriously considered using it themselves.
